June 26th

Today I started doing fence work with Free. This is where I sit on the fence and invite him over so that he can get used to me being above him. Eventually when he is completely comfortable with me being above him, I will start sitting on him with one foot on the fence so that I stay safe if he freaks out a little. He is not ready for me to do this yet. I am able to get him to smell me and let me touch his face. When he gets nervous he runs over to his favorite toy, the blue yoga ball, and smashes his nose on it. He always then looks up at me and looks like he is questioning me if he did a good job. I used the rope to put around his cinch area and move him around. I am expecting a jump and buck from him. I get no such excitement and he acts like it is no big deal. I bounce around a little and he gets nervous but quickly overcomes it. I introduce him to the saddle pad and he is a bit nervous but quickly gets over it. I show him an english saddle and start rubbing him with it. I take the stirrup off and toss it over his back until it doesn't matter, then I put the english saddle on his back and let him carry it. I let the cinch down but it doesn't reach :) Free needs a diet. I decide the day went really well so I quit.
