The week with Free

It has certainly been a long week and now I am here trying to write it all down. It all started Thursday night (July 19th). I took my heavy saddle in the round pen and worked Free with a flag. Then I put the saddle on. Still no jumping or goofiness despite that this is the first time with the heavy saddle. He was a little nervous but not reactive at all. I let him trot around with it then took a few photos and quit. Friday morning Kathy arrives with trailer and Free and I work on it. He is not sure he wants to go in. I remind myself that this is only his second time and take it slow. It only takes 45 minutes this time and then I squish him between dividers which he finds very odd. Off to Lifesavers he goes to be a part of the clinic and get used to crowds. Saturday I teach the clinic and use Free for the first part of it. He does well but is nervous. I have different people lead him around. Freedom's answer to everything scary is to back up and that is not a good answer. We work on it and then he gets to relax. At lunch time I saddle him and stand in the stirrup. He is not too bothered and I want to get on but he is not ready. I remind myself not to rush and step down. Sunday we do more clinic and then after the clinic we play! The arena is huge and I set him free to play at liberty. He doesn't want to follow much and we play "Your not my mommy" with him. This is a game where several people make it uncomfortable to be anywhere except by me. He is strong. Free does not think he needs a leader. I play on 22ft of rope to get him soft and he drags me a little and gets irritated. At one time he bolts and gets lose so I go capture him and start over. He starts to improve. It is almost dark and we have to load up. Free does not want to and I am starting to get frustrated with him pulling on me. Kathy reminds me to breathe. I take a breath, pet him, and walk inside the trailer to show him that it is okay. He follows me in and has no problems being squished this time. At home he leads to his pen in the dark nicely. What a weekend we had :)

LOL It's only because I share my life with Symphony that I knew it was time to just stop and say I love you.
